Project Biothene
Our project, Biothene, is committed to providing biodegradable bags made from bioplastic derived from corn starch. This innovative and eco-friendly product directly addresses the urgent and growing problem of single-use plastic waste. By offering a plant-based alternative, Biothene aims to replace conventional plastic bags with sustainable, biodegradable solutions that are safe for the environment. Although we are currently in the early stages of development, we have ambitious plans to broaden our product range to include various other sustainable alternatives to traditional single-use plastic products, ensuring a wider impact in the fight against plastic pollution.
The Plight of Single-Use Plastic
Biothene was officially launched in early April 2024 with a clear purpose: to combat the increasing problem of single-use plastic waste filling up landfills in Delhi and other parts of India. We identified a need for environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic and sought to provide a solution in the form of biodegradable bags made from corn starch. These bags are water-resistant, durable, and most importantly, they decompose naturally, making them a viable replacement for the harmful plastic bags that are currently prevalent. As our initiative progresses, our goal is to expand our product offerings, developing new sustainable solutions that address the same problem of single-use plastic waste.
Our Goals
Our primary objective is to completely eliminate the use of single-use plastic bags in Delhi by the end of 2024. In addition to this, we aim to collaborate with multinational corporations to boost revenue and increase awareness about the importance of sustainable alternatives. By partnering with larger entities, we hope to scale our impact and reach a wider audience. We also aspire to work with the Municipal Corporation, which would allow us to broaden our reach even further. Additionally, collaborating with hospitals would be an ideal opportunity to promote our biodegradable alternatives within the healthcare sector, encouraging sustainable practices in a field that often relies on single-use products.
Our Business Model: Social Impact and Sustainability
Biothene's business model is not only about environmental sustainability but also social impact. We source our biodegradable bags from manufacturers and work closely with underprivileged women and NGOs. Acting as intermediaries, we ensure that our profit margins remain minimal, allowing us to sustain our operations while simultaneously supporting and empowering local communities. This circular economy approach helps to uplift marginalized groups and create a positive social impact alongside the environmental benefits.
By supporting Biothene, you contribute to a larger movement for environmental sustainability and social empowerment. Together, we can drive meaningful change and help build a more sustainable future.
